MATERIAL TEST N139

Compression Test Device For Fiber Reinforced Plastics
(in accordance with ASTM D3410)

Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), a core material among composites, has various characteristics depending on its composition (matrix, reinforcing fiber and filler), and has made remarkable progress over the years. When compared with metallic and rubber materials, however, its history is very short. The Japanese Industrial Standards Committee has been vigorous for standardization of FRP characteristics evaluations while referring to other standards such as ASTM.
This machine is a compression test device in conformance to ASTM D3410 for one-way reinforced or 0-90゚ orthotropic fiber reinforced plastics. It will be mounted on an Autograph together with a compression-loading unit and compression plates suitable for a required load capacity for testing (Fig. 1). The upper compression plate has a spherical seat mechanism, and a load will be precisely detected by the load cell. The compression test device (Fig. 2) pushes in the tapered sleeve along the cylindrical guide so that the specimen will not buckle. In addition, accurate loading is practical without slipping of the chuck depending on tapering between the grip and sleeve.
